They will call it conviction in the building and a reach everywhere else: Dominique Hampton, 61 picks early at the 173rd pick. The board pushed back all weekend, and the D is the result.
They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. The Hart pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with quarterback still on the board. They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it.
The bill for those future picks comes due whether the class hits or not. Getting James where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and quarterback is still a hole.
Pick-by-Pick
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Xavier Legette. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They went early on Ruke Orhorhoro in the 53rd overall pick, and the value did not follow. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Patrick Paul in pick No. 64 is fair value, right on his grade. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
No edge and no loss on Bralen Trice in the 65th pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Value with a capital V on DJ James in slot 68, a genuine coup. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Brandon Dorlus at pick 89 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
By-the-book stuff, Christian Mahogany at No. 91 squarely in line with his ranking. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Matt Goncalves well ahead of where he belonged. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A real head-scratcher, Theo Johnson in pick 95 is miles ahead of his ranking. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A surprising call. With quarterback still to address, they spent the 101st overall pick on Cam Hart, a cornerback they were not short of.
Johnny Wilson at Round 4, Pick 3 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A clean, defensible pick in pick No. 120 with a little surplus value in Cedric Gray. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A reasonable price with a little left over, McKinnley Jackson in the 126th pick. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Kitan Oladapo this early at the Round 4 slot. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Dwight McGlothern at pick 158 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
A conviction pick on Dillon Johnson at No. 159 that the board grades a round light. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Ryan Flournoy in the Round 5 slot is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Value said wait; Kendall Milton in Round 5, Pick 36 says they were not listening. A need, and now a little less of one.
Dominique Hampton at the 173rd overall pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
