After circling the position for what felt like forever, the Patriots committed. Michael Penix Jr. is the quarterback now, and the roster gets built to his timeline. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through interior defensive lineman. However the rest shakes out, Baker at that price is a win they earned. The Patriots clearly valued win-now help, adding bodies who have done it before.
The Spann-Ford pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the interior defensive lineman spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 9 they get a passer to set the clock by. A clean fit for the roster.
They took Chris Braswell at par in No. 39, which is nothing to complain about. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Nice patience on Bucky Irving, who had no business lasting to slot 104. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Javon Baker in pick No. 108 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Jacob Cowing in the 136th pick is fair value, right on his grade. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Delmar Glaze. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A reach for Brevyn Spann-Ford in the Round 7 slot; a little patience would have been rewarded. A need, and now a little less of one.
