Nobody had Logan Lee this high, and it is not close. The Chiefs reached 40 spots to get him at No. 172. The board pushed back all weekend, and the D is the result.
The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up.
They are betting the present roster is worth a lighter draft next spring. Wide receiver is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even.
Pick-by-Pick
Keon Coleman at the 38th pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Ruke Orhorhoro in pick 50 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They went early on Bralen Trice in Round 2, Pick 21, and the value did not follow. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Patrick Paul. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A conviction pick on Max Melton at pick No. 68 that the board grades a round light. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
A tidy little value on Christian Haynes in the 69th overall pick, a step better than break-even. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They talked themselves into Theo Johnson at slot 95, and the board did not agree. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
The board had cheaper options than Matt Goncalves at pick 105, and it noticed. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Johnny Wilson at the 106th pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
James Williams at No. 110 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It fills a real need, too.
Kitan Oladapo in the 118th overall pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
McKinnley Jackson in pick No. 120 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The roster fit checks out.
They took Dwight McGlothern at par in the Round 5 slot, which is nothing to complain about. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Jared Wiley at Round 5, Pick 33 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Logan Lee this early at Round 5, Pick 36. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Kendall Milton at the 173rd pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Ty'Ron Hopper at the Round 6 slot is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Dominique Hampton at slot 202 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
