Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Packers were there to profit. Ro Torrence, the No. 179 name on the board, should have been long gone before the 255th overall pick. The bottom line is a respectable B-.
The Bortolini pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. A whole weekend of picks and edge rusher is somehow still a want. They will answer for taking safety early while edge rusher, quarterback and other spots went begging.
The future picks help the war chest more than the win-now roster.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 25th pick they get an anchor for the offensive line. A real need, handled.
Edgerrin Cooper in the Round 2 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It adds depth where they could use a little.
They paid sticker price for Jaden Hicks in the 82nd overall pick, and that is fine. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Cole Bishop at safety with edge rusher, quarterback and other spots open.
Taking DJ James in pick No. 116 is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Roger Rosengarten at slot 118 is a conviction pick that outran the value. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Tanor Bortolini at Round 4, Pick 26 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They let Isaiah Davis come to them and pounced at No. 169. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A real head-scratcher, Jordan Magee in the 179th overall pick is miles ahead of his ranking. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Garret Greenfield at the Round 6 slot jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A need, and now a little less of one.
They robbed the room for Kamal Hadden here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A top-tier cornerback at a bargain, Ro Torrence in pick No. 255, plain and simple. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
