The tape said wait; the Cowboys did not. Amari Gainer went at pick No. 174, a good 128 picks before the board was ready. It nets out to a B-, which feels about right.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped offensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up. Landing Rakestraw Jr. that late papers over a lot of smaller sins. Job largely done: wide receiver settled and 3 of 8 of the wish list covered.
Good work on the whole, with offensive lineman the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a No. 1 receiver. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Circle this one: Ennis Rakestraw Jr. at pick No. 56 is a fall that decides a draft. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Khyree Jackson in slot 105 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Good price on Kamal Hadden in Round 5, Pick 6, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Stefon Thompson in the 155th pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A fine player at a spot low on the priority list.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Amari Gainer in No. 174, miles early. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
They reached a country mile for J.J. Weaver at Round 6, Pick 8, and the board is aghast. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
A real head-scratcher, Zion Logue in the 212th pick is miles ahead of his ranking. It fills a real need, too.
A big swing on Desmond Evans at No. 237, well ahead of any board in the building. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Elijah Simmons at pick No. 245 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
