You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Chiefs did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high.
Every board in the league had Milton lower, and that gap is the story. The Hart pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at quarterback and linebacker.
A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want. However the rest shakes out, Haynes at that price is a win they earned.
The bill for those future picks comes due whether the class hits or not.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and quarterback is still a hole.
Pick-by-Pick
They paid sticker price for Xavier Legette in pick No. 33, and that is fine. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Keon Coleman in Round 2, Pick 11 is fair value, right on his grade. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They liked Ruke Orhorhoro enough to skip the value, taking him in slot 50. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They jumped the gun on Bralen Trice, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
T.J. Tampa at the 64th pick is money in the bank, a cornerback taken below his worth. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Kiran Amegadjie in the Round 3 slot. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Dominick Puni in pick No. 79 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Steal is underselling it; Christian Haynes at No. 95 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A surprising call. With quarterback and linebacker still to address, they spent Round 4, Pick 9 on Cam Hart, a cornerback they were not short of.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Ben Sinnott. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
McKinnley Jackson in slot 120 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A curious use of pick 132. Quarterback and linebacker needed the pick; an OLB-EDGE in Javon Solomon did not.
Kitan Oladapo in the 159th pick lands just on the right side of the ledger. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
A wild overpay on Kendall Milton in the 173rd overall pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A need, and now a little less of one.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Ryan Flournoy well ahead of where he belonged. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
