Everything else got attention, and edge rusher got none. That is a strange way for the Chargers to leave a draft. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B-.
Landing Brooks that late papers over a lot of smaller sins. The Harrell reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade.
The skill positions did well by the weekend.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a home-run threat at receiver, though they paid up to get him. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Troy Franklin at pick No. 38 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Nice patience on Jonathon Brooks, who had no business lasting to pick 70. It fills a real need, too.
They took Junior Colson at par in the 117th pick, which is nothing to complain about. It adds depth where they could use a little.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Theo Wease in slot 143. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They did well to land Jonah Monheim in the 154th overall pick, just ahead of his grade. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
The board had Jack Nelson higher than No. 184, and the offensive lineman fell to them anyway. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A straight-up fair deal on Bryce Foster at Round 7, Pick 7, value and slot in agreement. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Tyler Harrell in the 238th overall pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
