You could see the war room lean forward. Andru Phillips at pick No. 203 is the sort of fall that does not happen, except it just did. Call it a sensible B-, earned the boring way.
The Rouse pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. The Bullard pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at edge rusher, quarterback and other spots. They will regret leaving edge rusher for another day if the season turns on it.
They went 4 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 25 they get a centerfielder for the defense. Need was not the driver here.
Jackson Powers-Johnson at No. 41 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A quiet steal in the Round 2 slot: Devontez Walker for less than the market said. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending the 88th overall pick on Javon Bullard with edge rusher, quarterback and other spots unsolved.
A premium they did not need to pay, Khyree Jackson a notch or two before his time. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
No drama and no debate, Will Shipley went about where he belonged in the 125th pick. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Cedric Gray at pick 135 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
A cornerback of that caliber at Round 6, Pick 28 is the definition of value, full stop. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Jordan Magee at Round 6, Pick 42 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
They talked themselves into Walter Rouse at No. 219, and the board did not agree. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Donovan Jennings at pick 246 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
