They finally answered the question that shadows every other one. J.J. McCarthy is the Giants' quarterback, full stop. A dependable weekend that grades out a B-.
The McCarthy reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up. Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Newton.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 17 they get a passer to set the clock by, though the board says they badly overpaid. A clean fit for the roster.
Fair-plus on Ladd McConkey, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They jumped the gun on Christian Haynes, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Bralen Trice. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A reach for Brandon Dorlus in the 70th pick; a little patience would have been rewarded. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A conviction pick on Renardo Green at Round 3, Pick 33 that the board grades a round light. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A market-rate running back, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Will Shipley. The roster fit checks out.
The board had Josh Newton higher than the Round 5 slot, and the cornerback fell to them anyway. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They paid a round early for Curtis Jacobs in slot 185, more than the board wanted. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
