The weekend has a hole in the middle of it named tight end, a need the Commanders walked right past.
Slaughter at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. Stockpiling next year's capital is patient, if unglamorous, asset work.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the tight end spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 12 they get a three-down runner, and a steal at that.
They read the board right and Jake Slaughter was the payoff at the Round 3 slot. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
CJ Daniels at slot 147 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the wide receiver. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
No edge and no loss on Taylen Green in pick No. 187; it is a wash and a sensible one. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They paid sticker price for Jadon Canady in No. 209, and that is fine. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
