The board owed the Dolphins one, and it paid up: De'Corian Clark, the No. 200 name on the board, sitting there at the 242nd pick like a gift left on the doorstep. A dependable weekend that grades out a B.
They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it. If Bortolini pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
Amarius Mims at Round 2, Pick 3 is money in the bank, a offensive lineman taken below his worth. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Chris Braswell at No. 53 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They took Johnny Wilson at par in pick No. 71, which is nothing to complain about. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Tyler Davis at the Round 4 slot is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A slide stopped in the 145th overall pick, with Cedric Gray worth more than the price. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Layden Robinson in pick 158 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. The roster fit checks out.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Keith Randolph Jr. in the 161st pick. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Andru Phillips at slot 186. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Roger Rosengarten slipping to No. 189 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Tanor Bortolini at pick 199 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
The board had Michael Barrett higher than slot 201, and the linebacker fell to them anyway. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
De'Corian Clark at Round 7, Pick 22 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
