The Patriots spent the pick that matters most on Jayden Daniels, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape. Very little went wrong, and the A- is earned.
The Barner reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. Bertrand falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch.
The future picks help the war chest more than the win-now roster.
A strong weekend's work, and a rare one to find this little fault with.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get the arm they will build around. A clean fit for the roster.
By-the-book stuff, Xavier Legette at pick No. 40 squarely in line with his ranking. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A premium they did not need to pay, Patrick Paul a notch or two before his time. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A straight-up fair deal on Devontez Walker at the 68th pick, value and slot in agreement. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
The board had cheaper options than Leonard Taylor III at No. 98, and it noticed. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Braelon Allen at the 100th overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Cole Bishop at Round 4, Pick 1 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They took Zak Zinter at par in pick 103, which is nothing to complain about. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Javon Solomon at pick 105 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A fine player at a spot low on the priority list.
They paid up for Elijah Jones at the 106th overall pick when waiting would have done the job. It adds depth where they could use a little.
No drama and no debate, Matt Goncalves went about where he belonged in the Round 4 slot. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A reach for Justin Eboigbe in Round 5, Pick 1; a little patience would have been rewarded. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Jalyx Hunt in No. 139 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Marist Liufau at the 140th pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
They did well to land Jarrian Jones in pick No. 142, just ahead of his grade. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
A real head-scratcher, AJ Barner in slot 146 is miles ahead of his ranking. It fills a real need, too.
Myles Cole at the 180th pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A tidy bit of business in slot 195, where Cornelius Johnson graded well above the range. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, JD Bertrand at pick No. 231. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
