Call it larceny. Isaac Guerendo sat on the board until pick No. 163, and the Patriots did not need to be asked twice.

They are betting Liufau proves the room right and everyone else wrong. They punted on safety, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. On the needs board they went 7 of 8, with edge rusher the one that mattered most.

Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.3 · Pick 3 · Joe Alt · OT · rank 4
In slot 3 they get a plug-and-play piece up front. A real need, handled.
R2.2 · Pick 34 · Laiatu Latu · DL-EDGE · rank 11
Laiatu Latu in No. 34 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R3.4 · Pick 68 · Kingsley Suamataia · OT · rank 70
Kingsley Suamataia in pick 68 is fair value, right on his grade. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R4.8 · Pick 108 · Maason Smith · DT · rank 104
A clean, defensible pick in Round 4, Pick 8 with a little surplus value in Maason Smith. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R4.9 · Pick 109 · Braelon Allen · RB · rank 113
Braelon Allen at pick No. 109 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The roster fit checks out.
R4.28 · Pick 128 · Cam Hart · CB · rank 115
The board had Cam Hart higher than the Round 4 slot, and the cornerback fell to them anyway. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
R5.1 · Pick 137 · Jared Wiley · TE · rank 137
They took Jared Wiley at par in the 137th pick, which is nothing to complain about. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R5.4 · Pick 140 · Elijah Jones · CB · rank 139
They paid sticker price for Elijah Jones in the 140th overall pick, and that is fine. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
R5.8 · Pick 144 · Luke McCaffrey · WR · rank 150
No drama and no debate, Luke McCaffrey went about where he belonged in slot 144. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R5.10 · Pick 146 · Marist Liufau · LB · rank 164
They talked themselves into Marist Liufau at the Round 5 slot, and the board did not agree. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
R5.27 · Pick 163 · Isaac Guerendo · RB · rank 138
Steal is underselling it; Isaac Guerendo at Round 5, Pick 27 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R5.30 · Pick 166 · Cornelius Johnson · WR · rank 160
A reasonable price with a little left over, Cornelius Johnson in the 166th overall pick. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R6.5 · Pick 180 · Justin Eboigbe · DL-EDGE · rank 193
Justin Eboigbe in pick No. 180 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R6.25 · Pick 200 · Joe Milton III · QB · rank 216
They liked Joe Milton III enough to skip the value, taking him in pick 200. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
