The Chiefs looked at the value chart, folded it up, and took Ryan Flournoy at Round 5, Pick 37 regardless, 30 picks early.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. They will answer for taking cornerback early while quarterback went begging. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up.
It is a win-now wager, and the future is the stake.
There is no soft landing here; this class has to massively overperform just to matter.
Pick-by-Pick
Xavier Legette in pick 43 lands just on the right side of the ledger. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
No edge and no loss on T.J. Tampa in slot 48; it is a wash and a sensible one. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Patrick Paul at the 64th pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A market-rate edge rusher, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Austin Booker. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A want over a need in Round 3, Pick 20: Kris Abrams-Draine adds a cornerback while quarterback keeps waiting.
Dadrion Taylor-Demerson slid further than he should have, and the Round 3 slot is lovely value for the safety. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Value with a capital V on Dominick Puni in Round 3, Pick 33, a genuine coup. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Theo Johnson at slot 98 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They paid up for McKinnley Jackson at No. 114 when waiting would have done the job. It fills a real need, too.
Tommy Eichenberg at the 116th overall pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A real head-scratcher, Cornelius Johnson in pick No. 159 is miles ahead of his ranking. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They reached into another round for Ryan Flournoy, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A straight-up fair deal on Kendall Milton at the 195th pick, value and slot in agreement. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
