Some picks age like wine; Jared Wiley at No. 114 will need to, sitting 46 spots clear of his grade. Put together, it is a D-.
The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain.
It is a win-now wager, and the future is the stake. Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Morgan.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and quarterback is still a hole.
Pick-by-Pick
They paid sticker price for Xavier Legette in No. 40, and that is fine. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Jordan Morgan at pick 48 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They read the board right and DJ James was the payoff at pick No. 64. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Ruke Orhorhoro at the Round 3 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
No drama and no debate, Austin Booker went about where he belonged in slot 78. The roster fit checks out.
Cedric Gray at the 95th pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A need, and now a little less of one.
Dominick Puni is a better player than pick No. 96 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Christian Mahogany in the 98th pick is fair value, right on his grade. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Johnny Wilson at slot 107 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Value said wait; Jared Wiley in Round 4, Pick 14 says they were not listening. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A straight-up fair deal on McKinnley Jackson at pick 116, value and slot in agreement. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A wild overpay on Kitan Oladapo in the Round 4 slot, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It adds depth where they could use a little.
A real head-scratcher, Cornelius Johnson in No. 159 is miles ahead of his ranking. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A big swing on Ryan Flournoy at the 183rd overall pick, well ahead of any board in the building. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A market-rate running back, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Kendall Milton. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
