Kansas City Chiefs

The phones sank the Chiefs this weekend: D-.

by CalvinylG · 2024 NFL Draft · 15 picks · 0 steals · 5 reaches
Value C+
Need B
Trades F
Future C-

There is reaching, and then there is Joshua Cephus at slot 224. The Chiefs jumped the board by 42 and dared it to prove them wrong.

Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain. It is a win-now wager, and the future is the stake.

Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, quarterback very much included.

Pick-by-Pick

R2.9 · Pick 41 · Xavier Legette · WR · rank 38
A tidy little value on Xavier Legette in pick 41, a step better than break-even. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R2.20 · Pick 52 · T.J. Tampa · CB · rank 51
T.J. Tampa at No. 52 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
R2.32 · Pick 64 · Patrick Paul · OT · rank 69
Patrick Paul at the Round 2 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R3.19 · Pick 83 · Mekhi Wingo · DT · rank 106
This one needs a full-page explanation: Mekhi Wingo in the 83rd overall pick, miles early. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R3.25 · Pick 88 · Dadrion Taylor-Demerson · S · rank 86
Dadrion Taylor-Demerson in slot 88 is fair value, right on his grade. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
R3.28 · Pick 91 · Gabriel Murphy · DL-EDGE · rank 92
No drama and no debate, Gabriel Murphy went about where he belonged in pick No. 91. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R3.32 · Pick 95 · Johnny Wilson · WR · rank 125
A big swing on Johnny Wilson at the 95th pick, well ahead of any board in the building. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R3.36 · Pick 99 · Christian Mahogany · OG · rank 98
They took Christian Mahogany at par in slot 99, which is nothing to complain about. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R4.32 · Pick 132 · AJ Barner · TE · rank 171
A wild overpay on AJ Barner in pick 132, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R5.23 · Pick 159 · Jalyx Hunt · DE-EDGE · rank 152
Good price on Jalyx Hunt in the Round 5 slot, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R5.37 · Pick 173 · Cornelius Johnson · WR · rank 187
A reach for Cornelius Johnson in No. 173; a little patience would have been rewarded. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R6.27 · Pick 202 · Kendall Milton · RB · rank 201
A straight-up fair deal on Kendall Milton at the 202nd overall pick, value and slot in agreement. The roster fit checks out.
R6.34 · Pick 209 · Nathaniel Watson · LB · rank 212
No edge and no loss on Nathaniel Watson in pick No. 209; it is a wash and a sensible one. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R6.39 · Pick 214 · Garret Greenfield · OT · rank 216
Garret Greenfield in Round 6, Pick 39 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R7.4 · Pick 224 · Joshua Cephus · WR · rank 266
They talked themselves into Joshua Cephus at Round 7, Pick 4, and the board did not agree. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
