There was a run on nobody at that position, and the Chiefs started one anyway for Joshua Cephus, 69 picks ahead of schedule. It grades a D, and the process earned it.
The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. The quarterback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. It is a win-now wager, and the future is the stake.
Taylor-Demerson falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, quarterback very much included.
Pick-by-Pick
No edge and no loss on Jordan Morgan in the Round 2 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A straight-up fair deal on DJ James at slot 48, value and slot in agreement. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Value with a capital V on Jermaine Burton in No. 64, a genuine coup. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A reach for Michael Hall Jr. in Round 3, Pick 10; a little patience would have been rewarded. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They paid sticker price for Austin Booker in pick No. 79, and that is fine. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Dadrion Taylor-Demerson slipping to the 95th pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Value said wait; Theo Johnson in Round 3, Pick 33 says they were not listening. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They did well to land Christian Mahogany in the 103rd pick, just ahead of his grade. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Johnny Wilson at pick 105 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Matt Goncalves. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Tommy Eichenberg at the 132nd overall pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Dwight McGlothern at No. 159 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Ryan Flournoy at pick No. 173 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Kendall Milton this early at slot 181. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Joshua Cephus in pick No. 197, miles early. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
