The Commanders torched the value chart for Red Murdock, taking him 126 spots sooner than anyone had him slotted.
Allen falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. The Murdock pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at wide receiver, offensive lineman and other spots. The wide receiver spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
Tight end was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
If Sonny Styles and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 7 they get a three-down second-level presence. More want than need.
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending the Round 3 slot on Red Murdock with wide receiver, offensive lineman and other spots unsolved.
They paid a round early for Nate Boerkircher in Round 5, Pick 7, more than the board wanted. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They barely believed it either: Kaytron Allen still on the board at the 187th pick. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Ephesians Prysock at pick 209 is money in the bank, a cornerback taken below his worth. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A quiet steal in No. 223: David Gusta for less than the market said. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
