The Lions torched the value chart for Kevin Coleman Jr., taking him 47 spots sooner than anyone had him slotted. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B.
However the rest shakes out, Lew at that price is a win they earned. That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. Job largely done: cornerback settled and 4 of 9 of the wish list covered.
Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 17 they get a plug-and-play piece up front at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
You do not let a cornerback like Jermod McCoy reach the 50th pick and blink. They did not. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A real head-scratcher, Kevin Coleman Jr. in Round 4, Pick 18 is miles ahead of his ranking. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They robbed the room for Connor Lew here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Somehow Parker Brailsford was still sitting there in No. 157, and they pounced on premier offensive lineman value. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They paid a round early for Dae'Quan Wright in pick 181, more than the board wanted. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They will replay Anez Cooper at the Round 6 slot for years; that is how good the value is. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Aamil Wagner at the 213th pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Aaron Graves is a better player than the 222nd overall pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It adds depth where they could use a little.
