Somewhere a scout is still blinking. The Chiefs spent Round 3, Pick 32 on Ben Sinnott, a name the board had a full 35 spots lower. The board pushed back all weekend, and the D is the result.
The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. They will answer for taking cornerback early while quarterback went begging. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up.
If one pick saves this weekend, it is Laumea. They are betting the present roster is worth a lighter draft next spring.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, quarterback very much included.
Pick-by-Pick
Darius Robinson in Round 2, Pick 5 is fair value, right on his grade. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A straight-up fair deal on T.J. Tampa at pick 48, value and slot in agreement. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
No drama and no debate, Patrick Paul went about where he belonged in pick No. 64. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Brandon Dorlus at No. 70 is a conviction pick that outran the value. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Christian Haynes slipping to slot 74 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Dadrion Taylor-Demerson at the Round 3 slot is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Jeremiah Trotter Jr. in No. 92 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A big swing on Ben Sinnott at the Round 3 slot, well ahead of any board in the building. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Brenden Rice in the 107th overall pick. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They bypassed pressing needs at quarterback to take Caelen Carson, a cornerback that was not the priority.
Tyler Davis in slot 132 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Sataoa Laumea at Round 5, Pick 23 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They paid a round early for Cornelius Johnson in pick No. 173, more than the board wanted. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Ryan Flournoy in pick 181, miles early. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Kendall Milton in pick No. 197 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The roster fit checks out.
