Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Ryan Fitzgerald got past him. The Commanders do not have to explain a thing at the 247th pick. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B-.
They are betting Jones proves the room right and everyone else wrong. Leaving tight end unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. Job largely done: wide receiver settled and 5 of 8 of the wish list covered.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but tight end.
Pick-by-Pick
Shavon Revel Jr. at Round 1, Pick 32 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Ozzy Trapilo. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Sai'vion Jones at the 79th overall pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Value said wait; Roc Taylor in the 132nd pick says they were not listening. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They will replay Barrett Carter at pick 146 for years; that is how good the value is. It adds depth where they could use a little.
A running back of that caliber at No. 203 is the definition of value, full stop. A need, and now a little less of one.
Cody Simon in pick No. 236 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
They robbed the room for Ryan Fitzgerald here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
