The search is over. The Patriots handed the keys to Jayden Daniels, and the whole operation now runs on his development.
If McClellan pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. The Cowing pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. The dealing alone would carry a lesser class.
A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 9 they get a long-term answer under center. A clean fit for the roster.
In the Round 1 slot they get a weapon on the perimeter, reach and all. Exactly the need they had to hit.
In Round 1, Pick 32 they get a moveable chess piece at tight end at fair value. A real need, handled.
Kingsley Suamataia at pick 64 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. A need, and now a little less of one.
They reached into another round for Trey Benson, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It fills a real need, too.
A reach on Maason Smith in the 97th overall pick; the board had better options right there. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Renardo Green at the 101st pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They went early on Elijah Jones in No. 103, and the value did not follow. A minor itch, scratched.
Justin Eboigbe in the Round 4 slot is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Trevor Keegan in the 132nd overall pick is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Jase McClellan at the 149th pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A reach for Trente Jones in Round 6, Pick 2; a little patience would have been rewarded. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Tanor Bortolini in No. 180 is fair value, right on his grade. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They will replay Jacob Cowing at slot 193 for years; that is how good the value is. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They did well to land Frank Gore Jr. in pick 232, just ahead of his grade. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Circle this one: Nathan Thomas at pick No. 247 is a fall that decides a draft. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Darius Muasau at the 252nd overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A minor need, but a need all the same.
