The value of the weekend has a name and a slot: Nathan Thomas, No. 203, roughly 31 picks past where he belonged. The bottom line is a respectable B-.
The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. Spending an early pick on linebacker with edge rusher, quarterback and other spots open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to. Reaching for Logue left real value on the table behind him.
Job largely done: cornerback settled and 4 of 8 of the wish list covered.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a centerfielder for the defense. More want than need.
They paid up for Jackson Powers-Johnson at pick 41 when waiting would have done the job. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
By-the-book stuff, Edgerrin Cooper at slot 57 squarely in line with his ranking. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Mike Sainristil in the 88th overall pick. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A curious use of No. 92. Edge rusher, quarterback and other spots needed the pick; a linebacker in Junior Colson did not.
They paid sticker price for Will Shipley in the 125th pick, and that is fine. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Jaylen Wright in Round 4, Pick 35 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Somehow Nathan Thomas was still sitting there in pick No. 203, and they pounced on premier offensive lineman value. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Zion Logue in the 217th overall pick, miles early. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A reach on Mark Perry in Round 6, Pick 44; the board had better options right there. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Dwight McGlothern in No. 246 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
