The tape said wait; the Commanders did not. Jared Wiley went at No. 152, a good 54 picks before the board was ready.
The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. They banked enough surplus on Flournoy to cover a lot of smaller sins.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up. Tyree Wilson gives the group a proven body among the projects.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a premier pass rusher. A real need, handled.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Cooper DeJean in pick 36. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Kingsley Suamataia at the 40th overall pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Cooper Beebe in the 44th pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They let Payton Wilson come to them and pounced at Round 3, Pick 3. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
A straight-up fair deal on Michael Hall Jr. at No. 78, value and slot in agreement. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Javon Foster at the Round 3 slot is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Jarrian Jones in No. 139. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Value said wait; Jared Wiley in pick 152 says they were not listening. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They robbed the room for Ryan Flournoy here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
