The Patriots spent the weekend waiting on one name, and it fell: Dwight McGlothern, the No. 175 name on the board, in pick 217. It holds up to a second look, which is why it earns the A-.
They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own. Gargiulo has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced.
The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
Bottom line, they left the weekend a clearly better team, and they earned every bit of it.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 7 they get a cornerstone up front. A real need, handled.
Troy Franklin at No. 34 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Terrion Arnold at Round 2, Pick 4 is the proof. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
They paid up for Cooper Beebe at the 68th overall pick when waiting would have done the job. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Zak Zinter at the Round 4 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
No drama and no debate, Braelon Allen went about where he belonged in slot 104. It fills a real need, too.
Johnny Wilson is a better player than the 136th pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A tidy little value on Theo Johnson in pick No. 140, a step better than break-even. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Luke McCaffrey in the Round 5 slot is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Caedan Wallace in the 179th overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The roster fit checks out.
Nick Gargiulo in the 182nd pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A reach on Jaylan Ford in slot 184; the board had better options right there. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Dwight McGlothern at pick 217 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Tip Reiman at pick No. 219 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A need, and now a little less of one.
A linebacker of that caliber at Round 6, Pick 45 is the definition of value, full stop. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
A reach for Trey Knox in No. 229; a little patience would have been rewarded. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A premium they did not need to pay, Bub Means a notch or two before his time. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
