The Chargers did not so much draft Zion Logue as overpay for him, 131 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend.
For all the activity, wide receiver went untouched, which is hard to explain. Getting Burke where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. Edge rusher was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
They came away with juice, if not much beef up front.
The verdict is a shrug for now, with the swing picks left to write the real ending.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 5 they get a mismatch in the passing game. A real need, handled.
McKinnley Jackson at the Round 2 slot is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Denzel Burke at the 69th pick is money in the bank, a cornerback taken below his worth. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Jasheen Davis in pick No. 105 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A real head-scratcher, Zion Logue in slot 142 is miles ahead of his ranking. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A big swing on Steele Chambers at Round 7, Pick 6, well ahead of any board in the building. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
