The Commanders spent the pick that matters most on Drake Maye, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B-.
They punted on wide receiver, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. Ford has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the wide receiver spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 4th pick they get a passer to set the clock by. A clean fit for the roster.
Troy Fautanu at Round 2, Pick 4 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Chris Braswell in No. 37 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. The roster fit checks out.
They read the board right and Kingsley Suamataia was the payoff at pick No. 68. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
The board had cheaper options than Blake Fisher at pick 100, and it noticed. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They went early on Donovan Jackson in the 104th overall pick, and the value did not follow. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Jaylan Ford at slot 141 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
They paid sticker price for Theo Johnson in the Round 6 slot, and that is fine. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A premium they did not need to pay, Joshua Gray a notch or two before his time. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
