The Hayden Hatten pick is the one that will follow the Chargers into the fall. They took him 138 spots ahead of his grade, and the board is not shy about saying so. A F, plain and simple.
They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. The Chargers indulged a want in Colson while a need in tight end stayed open.
That tight end hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. The bill for those future picks comes due whether the class hits or not.
In the end, a class that has to defy its grades just to matter.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 6th pick they get a premier pass rusher. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
In the Round 1 slot they get a lockdown presence outside at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
A slide stopped in Round 1, Pick 31, with Bralen Trice worth more than the price. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They paid sticker price for Chris Braswell in pick No. 38, and that is fine. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
This one needs a full-page explanation: T'Vondre Sweat in the 39th overall pick, miles early. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They jumped the gun on Edgerrin Cooper, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A minor itch, scratched.
A reach for Jonathon Brooks in pick 63; a little patience would have been rewarded. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Ricky Pearsall at Round 3, Pick 6 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A straight-up fair deal on Byron Murphy II at the Round 3 slot, value and slot in agreement. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They paid up for Bucky Irving at No. 86 when waiting would have done the job. A need, and now a little less of one.
The board had cheaper options than Gabriel Murphy at pick No. 96, and it noticed. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went linebacker with Junior Colson while clear needs at tight end sat open.
No drama and no debate, Javon Foster went about where he belonged in the 131st pick. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
No edge and no loss on Jordan Travis in the 143rd overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Hayden Hatten well ahead of where he belonged. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Dwight McGlothern at the 209th overall pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Value said wait; Jayson Jones in Round 6, Pick 40 says they were not listening. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They talked themselves into Richard Jibunor at the Round 7 slot, and the board did not agree. It fits a board better than it fits this team.
Aaron Lewis in No. 256 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
