You can hear the double-takes from here. The Steelers took Jack Pyburn at pick 237, roughly 49 spots before his name belonged. A F, plain and simple.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. The Steelers indulged a want in Bowry while a need in quarterback, interior defensive lineman and other spots stayed open. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through quarterback.
Spend now, pay later; the math only works if this class delivers. They banked enough surplus on Bernard to cover a lot of smaller sins.
The verdict is harsh because the weekend was, and there is little to argue.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 4th overall pick they get a go-to option on the outside, reach and all. A real need, handled.
They took Gennings Dunker at par in the Round 2 slot, which is nothing to complain about. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Germie Bernard at pick No. 76 is money in the bank, a wide receiver taken below his worth. A need, and now a little less of one.
They bypassed pressing needs at quarterback, interior defensive lineman and other spots to take Jude Bowry, an offensive lineman that was not the priority.
A reach on Kaden Wetjen in pick 216; the board had better options right there. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A premium they did not need to pay, Robert Spears-Jennings a notch or two before his time. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They reached into another round for Jack Pyburn, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
