The phones were a trap the Cowboys kept walking into, shipping out surplus on nearly every deal. The board pushed back all weekend, and the D is the result.
With cornerback and tight end unsolved, spending premium capital on safety is the choice that costs them. They punted on cornerback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. If Moore pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about.
The Howard pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch.
In the end, a class the front office will want to grow past quickly.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 17 they get a No. 1 receiver at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
In No. 26 they get a plug-and-play piece up front. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Nic Anderson in Round 2, Pick 11 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A market-rate edge rusher, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Patrick Payton. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
They took Ajani Cornelius at par in slot 58, which is nothing to complain about. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
By-the-book stuff, Danny Stutsman at the Round 2 slot squarely in line with his ranking. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A reach for Nicholas Singleton in pick No. 75; a little patience would have been rewarded. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Sonny Styles in the 90th overall pick lands just on the right side of the ledger. It adds depth where they could use a little.
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Malachi Moore at safety with cornerback and tight end open.
Donovan Smith is a better player than slot 122 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A reach on Alfred Collins in pick 154; the board had better options right there. The roster fit checks out.
Nice patience on Will Howard, who had no business lasting to Round 6, Pick 26. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
