The Cowboys did not so much draft Chip Trayanum as overpay for him, 86 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend. Put together, it is a D.
The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. That tight end hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
In short, the board sent warnings, and they will be hoping it was wrong.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 14th overall pick they get protection for the quarterback, outstanding value to boot. Exactly the need they had to hit.
In pick No. 26 they get a cornerstone up front. The biggest hole, addressed.
Landon Jackson is a better player than No. 46 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
By-the-book stuff, Danny Stutsman at pick 58 squarely in line with his ranking. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A straight-up fair deal on Jordan Hancock at slot 60, value and slot in agreement. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Nicholas Singleton at the 78th pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. It fills a real need, too.
They took J. Michael Sturdivant at par in the 90th pick, which is nothing to complain about. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Riley Leonard at Round 3, Pick 27 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They went early on Aubrey Burks in the 122nd overall pick, and the value did not follow. A minor itch, scratched.
A conviction pick on Alfred Collins at slot 154 that the board grades a round light. A need, and now a little less of one.
Chip Trayanum at No. 186 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
