You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Cowboys did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high. It grades a D+, and the process earned it.
Everything downstream of Shedeur Sanders depends on Shedeur Sanders, and the building knows it. If Sanders pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped tight end, which is a strange place to end up. However the rest shakes out, Etienne at that price is a win they earned.
A rough weekend that leaves the roster with more questions than answers.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 26th overall pick they get a passer to set the clock by, outstanding value to boot. A clean fit for the roster.
A straight-up fair deal on Landon Jackson at the 35th pick, value and slot in agreement. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Ajani Cornelius in slot 58 is fair value, right on his grade. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Danny Stutsman. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Tate Ratledge is a better player than Round 3, Pick 3 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
J. Michael Sturdivant at pick 90 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They paid a round early for Raheim Sanders in No. 91, more than the board wanted. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
The board fumbled Trevor Etienne all the way to the Round 4 slot, and they scooped it up. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They paid sticker price for Nick Emmanwori in the 122nd overall pick, and that is fine. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Will Sheppard at No. 154 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Domani Jackson at pick 186 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
