The Chiefs bet big and early on Kendall Milton, 32 picks ahead of the board. Bold does not always mean right. Too much went sideways, and the D is the honest tally.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. The Johnson value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. The quarterback hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
The bill for those future picks comes due whether the class hits or not.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and quarterback is still a hole.
Pick-by-Pick
Nothing to complain about; Jordan Morgan went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A straight-up fair deal on Keon Coleman at the 47th pick, value and slot in agreement. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
T.J. Tampa at pick No. 64 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A minor itch, scratched.
Austin Booker at the Round 3 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A quiet steal in slot 70: Christian Haynes for less than the market said. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Mekhi Wingo in Round 3, Pick 27 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They paid up for Theo Johnson at the 95th overall pick when waiting would have done the job. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They paid a round early for Brenden Rice in the Round 4 slot, more than the board wanted. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Tommy Eichenberg in pick 121, miles early. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Kitan Oladapo at the 131st pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Hunter Nourzad in pick No. 159 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Somehow Cornelius Johnson was still sitting there in No. 209, and they pounced on premier wide receiver value. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Kendall Milton in the Round 6 slot is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. The roster fit checks out.
