The Dolphins did not so much draft Keaton Bills as overpay for him, 56 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B.
The Jones value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. The Dolphins indulged a want in Smith while a need in quarterback, edge rusher and other spots stayed open.
They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it. Stockpiling next year's capital is patient, if unglamorous, asset work.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
Kingsley Suamataia at No. 54 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Zach Frazier in pick 55 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Dadrion Taylor-Demerson is a better player than the Round 3 slot suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Trevor Keegan. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A want over a need in the 120th overall pick: Maason Smith adds a DT-EDGE while quarterback, edge rusher and other spots keeps waiting.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Layden Robinson this early at Round 5, Pick 20. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Taking Elijah Jones in No. 158 is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
They reached a country mile for Keaton Bills at slot 184, and the board is aghast. It fills a real need, too.
Isaiah Williams in the 198th pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
