Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Patriots were there to profit. Elijah Jones, the No. 193 name on the board, should have been long gone before Round 7, Pick 9.
The phones were where this weekend was really won. The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
They will need Wright to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. Stockpiling next year's capital is patient, if unglamorous, asset work.
Add it up and few war rooms did better this weekend, Malik Nabers and all.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 7th pick they get a weapon on the perimeter. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
By-the-book stuff, Jordan Morgan at the Round 2 slot squarely in line with his ranking. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Adonai Mitchell at pick 38 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the wide receiver. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They liked Jaylen Wright enough to skip the value, taking him in No. 69. A need, and now a little less of one.
Braelon Allen at slot 104 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A straight-up fair deal on Theo Johnson at the 136th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They let Kamal Hadden come to them and pounced at Round 6, Pick 7. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Caedan Wallace in pick No. 184 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It fills a real need, too.
Elijah Jones in slot 229 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
