Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Chiefs spent pick No. 209 on Joshua Cephus, a name most had 54 spots down the list.
The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. Leaving quarterback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. If one pick saves this weekend, it is Nourzad.
They are betting the present roster is worth a lighter draft next spring.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, quarterback very much included.
Pick-by-Pick
Troy Fautanu at pick No. 19 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Braden Fiske at the 37th overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Value with a capital V on Malachi Corley in the Round 2 slot, a genuine coup. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They let Adisa Isaac come to them and pounced at Round 3, Pick 5. The roster fit checks out.
They paid sticker price for DJ James in slot 95, and that is fine. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Value said wait; Cedric Gray in No. 99 says they were not listening. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A reach for Johnny Wilson in the Round 4 slot; a little patience would have been rewarded. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Jared Wiley at Round 4, Pick 11 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They barely believed it either: Hunter Nourzad still on the board at No. 147. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A tidy bit of business in the 159th overall pick, where Kitan Oladapo graded well above the range. A minor itch, scratched.
Trevor Keegan slid further than he should have, and slot 173 is lovely value for the offensive lineman. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Jaden Crumedy in the 203rd pick is fair value, right on his grade. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Joshua Cephus this early at pick 209. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A wild overpay on Kendall Milton in pick No. 213, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
