The Chiefs did the meat-and-potatoes work well: B-.

The rest of the league had time to spare on AJ Barner; the Chiefs did not wait, grabbing him 33 spots ahead at slot 133. A dependable weekend that grades out a B-.

That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. On value alone, Johnson makes the weekend a net positive. Wide receiver is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.

The skill positions did well by the weekend.

Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.28 · Pick 28 · Xavier Worthy · WR · rank 47
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Xavier Worthy well ahead of where he belonged. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R2.32 · Pick 64 · Kiran Amegadjie · OT · rank 63
No drama and no debate, Kiran Amegadjie went about where he belonged in No. 64. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R4.31 · Pick 131 · Josh Newton · CB · rank 153
They left a pile of value on the table to take Josh Newton this early at the 131st pick. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
R4.33 · Pick 133 · AJ Barner · TE · rank 166
A wild overpay on AJ Barner in pick No. 133, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R5.23 · Pick 159 · Myles Cole · DE-EDGE · rank 157
Myles Cole at Round 5, Pick 23 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R5.37 · Pick 173 · Cornelius Johnson · WR · rank 161
Cornelius Johnson slipping to the 173rd overall pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R7.28 · Pick 248 · Nick Samac · C · rank 258
A conviction pick on Nick Samac at No. 248 that the board grades a round light. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
