Boards are made to be trusted, and the Cowboys shredded theirs for Matthew Jones. He came off 30 spots early, and the room will hear about it. It nets out to a B-, which feels about right.
The quarterback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. However the rest shakes out, Smith at that price is a win they earned. They went 4 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 24th overall pick they get a long-term starter on the line at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
They paid a round early for Payton Wilson in No. 56, more than the board wanted. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A big swing on Khyree Jackson at pick No. 87, well ahead of any board in the building. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Nice patience on Ainias Smith, who had no business lasting to the Round 4 slot. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They paid up for Michael Barrett at slot 174 when waiting would have done the job. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Matthew Jones. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Maurice Smith in the 245th overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
