The Cowboys looked at the value chart, folded it up, and took Desmond Evans at Round 6, Pick 37 regardless, 103 picks early.
They will regret leaving running back for another day if the season turns on it. Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Nabers.
Good work on the whole, with running back the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 24th pick they get a home-run threat at receiver at a price that makes it sweeter. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Circle this one: Kiran Amegadjie at pick No. 72 is a fall that decides a draft. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They talked themselves into Matt Goncalves at the Round 3 slot, and the board did not agree. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They read the board right and Max Melton was the payoff at the 124th overall pick. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Kris Abrams-Draine in No. 125 lands just on the right side of the ledger. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A big swing on Edefuan Ulofoshio at pick 129, well ahead of any board in the building. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Curtis Jacobs in No. 147 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Jaylan Ford. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They reached a country mile for Zion Logue at the 174th pick, and the board is aghast. A need, and now a little less of one.
A wild overpay on Desmond Evans in pick No. 212, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A minor itch, scratched.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Devin Leary this early at pick 217. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Zakhari Franklin at slot 219 is a conviction pick that outran the value. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A real head-scratcher, Rondell Bothroyd in Round 7, Pick 9 is miles ahead of his ranking. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Jayson Jones in the Round 7 slot is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Steele Chambers in the 233rd pick is fair value, right on his grade. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Darius Muasau in slot 237. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Derek Wingo in pick No. 240, miles early. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Elijah Simmons at Round 7, Pick 25 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Caleb Okechukwu at the 256th overall pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
