The real work happened on the phones. The Packers fleeced their trade partners, turning their picks into a noticeably bigger pile than they started with. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B.
They are betting Rouse proves the room right and everyone else wrong. A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want.
With quarterback, wide receiver and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on safety is the choice that costs them. They banked enough surplus on Jones to cover a lot of smaller sins.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the quarterback spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
A straight-up fair deal on Quinyon Mitchell at slot 33, value and slot in agreement. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They paid a round early for Jackson Powers-Johnson in pick No. 41, more than the board wanted. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
T'Vondre Sweat in the 57th pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They took Javon Bullard at par in No. 65, which is nothing to complain about. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
A real head-scratcher, Ray Davis in pick 88 is miles ahead of his ranking. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Marshawn Kneeland in Round 3, Pick 28 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
No edge and no loss on Will Shipley in the 125th overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A curious use of the Round 4 slot. Quarterback, wide receiver and other spots needed the pick; a safety in Cole Bishop did not.
By-the-book stuff, Omar Speights at the 203rd overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Myles Jones at Round 6, Pick 42 is money in the bank, a cornerback taken below his worth. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A wild overpay on Walter Rouse in pick 219, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
No drama and no debate, Tatum Bethune went about where he belonged in the 246th pick. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
