After circling the position for what felt like forever, the Commanders committed. J.J. McCarthy is the quarterback now, and the roster gets built to his timeline. Little to argue with here, and the A- says so.
Coleman has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. That is an offensive lineman worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly.
For all the activity, running back went untouched, which is hard to explain.
A strong weekend's work, and a rare one to find this little fault with.
Pick-by-Pick
R1.11
· Pick 11
· J.J. McCarthy
· QB
· rank 23
In pick No. 11 they get a long-term answer under center, reach and all. A clean fit for the roster.
R1.23
· Pick 23
· Troy Fautanu
· OT
· rank 21
Troy Fautanu in the 23rd overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R2.4
· Pick 36
· Chris Braswell
· LB-EDGE
· rank 44
Chris Braswell at the 36th pick jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. The roster fit checks out.
R2.8
· Pick 40
· Troy Franklin
· WR
· rank 33
Fair-plus on Troy Franklin, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R3.3
· Pick 67
· Max Melton
· CB
· rank 77
The board had cheaper options than Max Melton at pick 67, and it noticed. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R3.14
· Pick 78
· Marshawn Kneeland
· DE-EDGE
· rank 80
Marshawn Kneeland at slot 78 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R3.37
· Pick 100
· Khyree Jackson
· CB
· rank 95
A reasonable price with a little left over, Khyree Jackson in No. 100. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R4.29
· Pick 129
· Theo Johnson
· TE
· rank 122
A clean, defensible pick in Round 4, Pick 29 with a little surplus value in Theo Johnson. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R5.3
· Pick 139
· Javon Foster
· OT
· rank 119
A offensive lineman of that caliber at the Round 5 slot is the definition of value, full stop. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R5.16
· Pick 152
· Brandon Coleman
· OL
· rank 186
They talked themselves into Brandon Coleman at the 152nd overall pick, and the board did not agree. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R7.2
· Pick 222
· Ryan Flournoy
· WR
· rank 205
Ryan Flournoy is a better player than the 222nd pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
