The one hole that towered over the rest is filled. The Patriots spent their marquee pick on Jayden Daniels, and for the first time in a while there is a real answer at quarterback. Call it a sensible B+, earned the boring way.
The phones were where this weekend was really won. The cost of the McCaffrey reach is exactly the players who went right after him.
A whole weekend of picks and interior defensive lineman is somehow still a want. The Tyjae Spears pickup adds a known quantity to a class of unknowns.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 7 they get their quarterback of the future at fair value. A real need, handled.
In Round 1, Pick 27 they get a cornerstone up front. A clean fit for the roster.
No edge and no loss on Keon Coleman in pick No. 34; it is a wash and a sensible one. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Good price on Jordan Morgan in the 38th overall pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Patrick Paul in the Round 3 slot is fair value, right on his grade. The roster fit checks out.
Cade Stover in the 71st pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Brenden Rice. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Braelon Allen at pick 102 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They read the board right and Cam Hart was the payoff at slot 104. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
They paid sticker price for Johnny Wilson in the 125th overall pick, and that is fine. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A reach for Theo Johnson in pick 126; a little patience would have been rewarded. A need, and now a little less of one.
They jumped the gun on Marist Liufau, taking him earlier than his grade liked. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Justin Eboigbe in No. 137 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They reached into another round for Luke McCaffrey, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A conviction pick on Jalyx Hunt at the Round 5 slot that the board grades a round light. A pick in search of a role on this roster.
They took Caedan Wallace at par in the 176th pick, which is nothing to complain about. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Dwight McGlothern in Round 6, Pick 4 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
A reach on Javontae Jean-Baptiste in the 221st overall pick; the board had better options right there. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Tip Reiman at pick No. 226 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
