The Packers looked at the value chart, folded it up, and took Austin Reed at No. 245 regardless, 29 picks early.

Spending an early pick on safety with edge rusher, wide receiver and other spots open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to. Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.

Getting Melton where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. On the needs board they went 4 of 8, with cornerback the one that mattered most.

Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
