The board owed the Packers one, and it paid up: Cole Bishop, the No. 130 name on the board, sitting there at pick 168 like a gift left on the doorstep. It does the job without flash, and the B reflects it.
That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. The Packers indulged a want in Wilson while a need in edge rusher, quarterback and other spots stayed open.
The roster is better shaped than it was, with cornerback chief among the fixes. The weekend tilted hard toward the defense.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 25th pick they get a lockdown presence outside, outstanding value to boot. The biggest hole, addressed.
The board fumbled Taliese Fuaga all the way to No. 41, and they scooped it up. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They took Edgerrin Cooper at par in the 57th overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending the Round 3 slot on Payton Wilson with edge rusher, quarterback and other spots unsolved.
A slide stopped in Round 3, Pick 28, with Malachi Corley worth more than the price. A need, and now a little less of one.
They read the board right and Max Melton was the payoff at pick 126. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Cole Bishop at slot 168 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
You do not let a running back like Frank Gore Jr. reach pick No. 203 and blink. They did not. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Value with a capital V on Christian Jones in pick 216, a genuine coup. It fills a real need, too.
Good price on Brevyn Spann-Ford in No. 243, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Circle this one: Jordan Magee at Round 7, Pick 31 is a fall that decides a draft. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
