Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Cowboys were there to profit. Chau Smith-Wade, the No. 175 name on the board, should have been long gone before the Round 7 slot. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B.
That wide receiver hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. Allen has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. The roster is better shaped than it was, with cornerback chief among the fixes.
Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 24th overall pick they get protection for the quarterback at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
They paid sticker price for Zach Frazier in slot 56, and that is fine. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They went early on Braelon Allen in No. 104, and the value did not follow. The roster fit checks out.
Circle this one: Khyree Jackson at the 138th pick is a fall that decides a draft. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
By-the-book stuff, Trevin Wallace at the Round 5 slot squarely in line with his ranking. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A tidy little value on Braiden McGregor in Round 5, Pick 38, a step better than break-even. A minor itch, scratched.
Value with a capital V on Blake Watson in pick 216, a genuine coup. It fills a real need, too.
Somehow Chau Smith-Wade was still sitting there in pick No. 226, and they pounced on premier cornerback value. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They barely believed it either: Jaylan Ford still on the board at slot 233. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Julian Pearl at No. 244. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
