The Commanders spent real capital to be 45 picks early on Hykeem Williams, and the board is going to hold them to it. Good, not great, and the B says as much.
Leaving tight end unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. On the needs board they went 5 of 8, with wide receiver the one that mattered most.
It is a bet on later, and a defensible one for a team playing the long game. Adding Willie Gay by trade rounds out the weekend beyond the rookies.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 7th pick they get a centerpiece for the ground game at fair value. A real need, handled.
They went early on Taylen Green in slot 180, and the value did not follow. It fills a real need, too.
A straight-up fair deal on Jeff Caldwell at the 187th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Thaddeus Dixon in the Round 6 slot is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They paid a round early for Lander Barton in Round 7, Pick 7, more than the board wanted. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
They paid up for Eli Heidenreich at No. 234 when waiting would have done the job. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Hykeem Williams well ahead of where he belonged. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Bryce Foster in pick No. 244 is fair value, right on his grade. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
