The one hole that towered over the rest is filled. The Patriots spent their marquee pick on Jayden Daniels, and for the first time in a while there is a real answer at quarterback. They executed a plan and it shows in the A-.
If one pick saves this weekend, it is Harden. The phones were where this weekend was really won. The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
Bottom line, they did the job about as well as it can be done.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 10 they get the arm they will build around at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Brian Thomas Jr. in the 34th pick. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Kingsley Suamataia at pick 48 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A need, and now a little less of one.
No drama and no debate, Patrick Paul went about where he belonged in the Round 3 slot. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
No edge and no loss on Xavier Legette in the 74th overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A clean, defensible pick in slot 102 with a little surplus value in Trey Benson. It fills a real need, too.
Chau Smith-Wade in Round 4, Pick 36 lands just on the right side of the ledger. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Malik Mustapha in No. 179 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
You do not let a cornerback like Myles Harden reach the 231st pick and blink. They did not. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
