Nobody had Thor Griffith this high, and it is not close. The Cowboys reached 105 spots to get him at slot 170.
Getting Paul Jr. where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped cornerback, which is a strange place to end up. They will answer for taking edge rusher early while cornerback, quarterback and other spots went begging.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the cornerback spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 13th overall pick they get a bendy edge with upside. Need was not the driver here.
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Mikail Kamara adds an edge rusher and leaves cornerback, quarterback and other spots untouched.
Clay Webb at the 78th pick nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Mykel Williams in No. 150 is fair value, right on his grade. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
A wild overpay on Cashius Howell in pick No. 169, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Thor Griffith at Round 5, Pick 32 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Chris Paul Jr. at the Round 5 slot is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Brennan Presley in pick No. 190 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Joey Slackman in the 209th pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
