The tape said wait; the Dolphins did not. Keaton Bills went at the 198th overall pick, a good 42 picks before the board was ready.
The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. Smith at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 31 they get a cornerstone up front at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Kris Jenkins at pick No. 55 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the edge rusher. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
No edge and no loss on Kingsley Suamataia in the 63rd pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They paid sticker price for James Williams in Round 4, Pick 24, and that is fine. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
A quiet steal in the Round 5 slot: Ainias Smith for less than the market said. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Julian Pearl in pick 176 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. The roster fit checks out.
Kamal Hadden at pick No. 184 is money in the bank, a cornerback taken below his worth. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Keaton Bills at the Round 6 slot is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They liked LaDarius Henderson enough to skip the value, taking him in the 241st overall pick. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
