The Cowboys torched the value chart for Gerry Bohanon, taking him 248 spots sooner than anyone had him slotted. A weekend that fought the value and lost, hence the D+.
Getting Mondon Jr. where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close.
They will regret leaving tight end for another day if the season turns on it. The Cowboys indulged a want in Mukuba while a need in tight end and interior defensive lineman stayed open.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, tight end very much included.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 4 they get a plug-and-play piece up front. The biggest hole, addressed.
In pick 13 they get a true top target at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Nick Emmanwori at the Round 2 slot is money in the bank, a safety taken below his worth. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Nice patience on Jalon Walker, who had no business lasting to the 35th overall pick. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Omarion Hampton in Round 2, Pick 12 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It fills a real need, too.
A conviction pick on Ashton Gillotte at pick No. 54 that the board grades a round light. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
They reached into another round for Carson Beck, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
No edge and no loss on Darien Porter in pick 73; it is a wash and a sensible one. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Nicholas Singleton at No. 78 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending the Round 4 slot on Andrew Mukuba with tight end and interior defensive lineman unsolved.
Evan Stewart in the 106th pick lands just on the right side of the ledger. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Maxwell Hairston at Round 4, Pick 8. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
TreVeyon Henderson in slot 119 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Dont'e Thornton Jr.. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Willie Lampkin at the 170th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Smael Mondon Jr. at the Round 5 slot is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Gerry Bohanon in No. 189 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A need, and now a little less of one.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Shilo Sanders at Round 7, Pick 34 is the proof. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
